Artist Statement or Bio
I’m Alexis Turner, known as "Lex Blaek"—a self-taught graphic and web designer who’s been bending the rules of marketing and art for over 5 years, but truthfully? My rebellion against the ordinary started way before that. Since childhood, I’ve seen the world differently—through a lens of bold colors, unshakable confidence, and the kind of creativity that refuses to be boxed in. Photography, design, branding—I don’t just do them. I breathe them. My work isn’t just pixels and pretty things; it’s a declaration. A middle finger to "how it’s always been done." As a free-spirited Black woman, I fuse Afrocentric power with modern edge, turning every project into a statement piece. Whether it’s a logo that demands attention, a photo that tells your story raw and uncut, or branding that makes you unforgettable—I put my soul into it.
Art Description
Centered around an African American woman, this work unfolds as a sacred alter, a visual narrative of my ancestry. Floral motifs (magnolias, hibiscus, or jasmine) bloom from my silhouette, while oceanic waves ripple through the composition, symbolizing the depths of memory and the fluidity of identity. Behind me, the watchful eyes of her maternal and paternal foremothers emerge like constellations, their gazes illuminated by the soft glow of candles—a testament to their guidance and presence. This is my way of thanking them for paving the roads before me, while guiding me on my own.
